When we think of music, we often think of rhythm, melody, and lyrics that move us. But for one young girl with Profound and Multiple Learning Disability (PMLD), music became far more than this — it became her voice.
Although her body presented many physical challenges, her mind was bright, curious, and expressive. With the help of an eye gaze device, she was already communicating with family and friends, choosing words, sharing feelings, and building connections. Yet she had one dream that felt out of reach: to sing.

Turning a Dream Into Possibility
Her love for Ed Sheeran’s Perfect was well known. She played it often, listening intently, longing to join in like other children her age. For her, being able to sing wasn’t simply about music — it was about identity, expression, and belonging.
That’s when the power of collaboration stepped in. A music therapist, working alongside a specialist speech and language therapist, created something remarkable. Together, they designed a programme for her eye gaze device that allowed her to select, edit, and play clips of her favourite song.
Now, with a simple glance at the screen, she could trigger Ed Sheeran’s voice to sing her chosen words and phrases.
A Duet Like No Other
The first time she performed was unforgettable. Sitting proudly with her device, she gazed at the words she wanted to play. One by one, the lyrics rang out, filling the room. At her side, the music therapist strummed the chords on a guitar, weaving the live sound around her chosen voice clips.
Together, they created a duet — not Ed Sheeran and Beyoncé, but something even more powerful: a young girl who had longed to sing, finally finding a way to do so.
Her family described it as “like hearing her voice for the very first time.” The joy in her eyes and the pride on her face spoke volumes.
More Than Music
This wasn’t just about achieving a childhood dream. It was about showing what’s possible when creativity, technology, and therapeutic expertise meet. It was about giving a young girl the chance to express herself on her own terms, to be seen and heard.
Music therapy often opens doors we never thought possible. For this young girl, it opened the door to her dream — and, in doing so, reminded us all of the extraordinary ways music can change lives.
